John started his career at a very young age with the idea of making cloths for young man, his mother supported him and allowed him to start that business from her house to be taken over to grow up the business.
John noticed that wool ski hat were popular at that time but these hats were sold for $20 which he thought is expensive for the hat, so he sewed these hats by himself and sold them at the corner of Jamaica Avenue for $10 and earned almost $800 in a day in 1992. He did not stop here then he started working on tee shirts and sold his item on large events to enter the market.
He needed a logo for his brand to be recognized, at that time a four letter brand name was commonly used such as coke and Nike so he came up with the idea of FUBO which stands for “for us, by us”. He invited his long time friends to join join him in business including Brown, J. Alexander Martin, and Keith Perrin. He work so hard on making logo and then printing that logo on different items which includes hockey jerseys, sweatshirts and tee shirts. He gave his shirts on loan to different rappers to wear them in their music video also used product placement method to make his brand known.
In 1993 Jame persuaded LL Cool J to wear FUBU T-shirt for his promotional campaign and also in a commercial and incorporated the words “for us, by us”.
John earned profit of $300,000 in retailers’ order at the Las Vegas fashion trade show Magic in 1994. He wanted to make more products he needed more capital but got rejected by almost every bank then his mother used the remaining money to take out an advertisement in The New York Times. This ad gave a positive result and they tied a deal with Samsung Textiles which helped them in completing orders. FUBU made over $6 billion in global sales.
He gained recognition after becoming member of”the sharks” on the reality show Shark Tank where entrepreneurs present their business ideas to a panel of investors.
